Free Forming Interest Group

A well-attended, second Free Forming interest group meeting gave PowdermatriX industrialists and academics an up-date, and also the opportunity to see one of the latest manufacturing machines in operation. Greg Gibbons, Warwick Manufacturing Group, showed delegates the Arcam Electron Beam Melting system manufacturing a full density part from stainless steel powder.
Martin Hedges, Neotech, explained Rapid Manufacture with Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS), and Stuart Jackson, EOS, described Direct Metal Sintering and ceramic developments.
Angelos Economou reported significant research on functionally graded materials at De Montford University.

Discussing the rate of change in Free Forming technology, Stuart Jackson of EOS commented, “Laser Sintering doesn't stand still and even at 6 month intervals I will be able to show new things”.
